Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 22, opened fire on a bus on the way back from a field trip to see a play in Washington DC, killing Devin Chandler as he slept, along with D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis Jr., on Sunday, Nov. 13, prosecutors said during the initial hearing. Two other victims were injured in the incident, authorities previously said.
Darnell's dad tells NBC12 his son — a former member of the football team, himself — had expressed there were people who had been "giving him a hard time," but the athlete remained positive.
"He had some problems the last time I talked to him. He said some people were picking on him or whatever, he didn’t know how to handle it and I told him just go to school, don’t pay it any mind," Darnell Sr. said.
"I don’t know what happened between then and now to cause this to happen."
Jones in 2021 was convicted on a misdemeanor charge of having a concealed weapon in Chesterfield, VA, officials pointed out at the hearing. Later that year he was convicted on warrants for misdemeanor hit-and-run property damage and reckless driving charges.
The former athlete, who was captured in Henrico County, was being held without bail and facing three felony charges of second-degree murder and firearm use in the commission of a felony. He was also charged with malicious wounding and more weapons related offenses.
